Dishing It: Summer Reading

Amanda over at Serenity Now is having another blog party.

150dish

This month’s topic is your summer reading list.  At first I didn’t want to join.  After all, my reading list right now isn’t too exciting.  And I’m pretty sure the books I’m reading to the kids don’t count =)  But, then I thought that someone else might be interested in what I’m reading.

The 5 books I’m reading right now (yes, I am reading that many)

1) The Uncommon Woman by Susie Larson

2) Run Like A Mother by Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea

3) Run Less, Run Faster by Bill Pierce, Scott Murr and Ray Moss

4) Barefoot Running by Michael Sandler

5) Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham Jr

I generally read non- fiction books.  Usually some type of devotional/ Bible study or health and nutrition related.  These types of books seem easier to put down and walk away from for awhile (except the Bible studies- that’s an almost daily read).

Next up on my list are books about gluten- free living.  Not that anyone in the house needs a gluten- free diet.  It’s just something that is interesting to me.  I’ll probably start with Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.  And then find other books and cookbooks for more information =)  Of course, the books I’m reading now will take me quite awhile to get through, so it’ll probably be a few months before I get to any others lol!

I can’t really say I have any favorite magazines.  Every so often we’ll pick up one on hobby farms or country living (looking forward to the day we can move back to the country =))  but that’s about it.

I find time to read by getting up early or by putting the kids to bed early (or earlier than normal ;)).

I usually get my books off of Amazon.  It’s so much easier to just order them instead of running to the store, trying to keep the kids entertained while I look…

These are the 5 books that we’re reading to the kids right now.

1) American Bible Society Read and Learn Bible

2) Bible Prayers for Bedtime by Jane Landreth

3) The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf

4) The Year at Maple Hill Farm by Alice and Martin Provensen

5) The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle

The last 3 books on this list are part of the books for the kindergarden curriculum that I’m using with Junior.  The nice thing about the books is that all 3 of the kids like to sit and listen to the stories.

  1. Finding a book that more than one kid will listen to at the same time is a big deal! ;) My girls are really into Little Golden Books and The Berenstain Bears. :) Thanks for linking up! I hope you have fun partying this week. :)

  2. I delved into Nourishing Traditions a couple years ago...didn't stick (I think it's good advice, I just wasn't ready for it).
I'm going to look for Family Driven Faith. Thanks for the recommendation.

  3. I am so jealous that your kids will sit and listen to the same book! Every time we sit down to read one of them wants to turn the page but the other one isn't ready! I really need to be better about reading my daily devotions, somehow I tend to forget about it before I go to bed! Thank you for the inspiration!

  4. My sister in law is gluten intolerent and has been dealing with this new lifestyle of having to eat gluten free. It is really hard for her and her family to afford gluten free food but I am seeing more and more food labeled gluten free. Best of luck to you and your family as you try to give them better nutrition. I would try but I'm sure I would get a big NO!

  5. Wow - I am so impressed with your list and dedication to reading! We read Bible stories and prayers to our 6yo, too. A fabulous way to start hiding His word in their hearts!

  6. I'm interested in the Run Less, Run Faster book. My running has slowed down (frequency) this summer because I've been gone so much. I have a friend who can't digest gluten. I had no idea that it is in so many things.

  7. You have some good books on your list. I'm reading Run Like a Mother and Run Less, Run Faster is on my wishlist.

I'm curious now, where in WI were you from. There aren't a lot of town in WI near the Twin Cities. I grew up in WI 90 min from the TC.

  8. Back again! lol.
I read your comment on my blog. Thanks for visiting.

My sister in law doesn't cook all that well and prefers to use boxed food and such.
I made her a wonderful gluten free meal one day from an online recipe and I thought it was fantastic. It was a chicken dish with veggies and it was so good. I used a variety of spices taht really gave it a great flavor and I rememember a hot kick.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

  9. Hi I'm visiting from Amanda's party. I looked up the family driven faith book & it looks like an interesting read :-) I also like to start multiple books at once, my only problem is finding time to actually finish them all! :-) Take care.

  10. So I'm not the only one who reads multiple books at one time! :)

You sound like a woman of many interests--my kind of gal. Kudos to you for passing your love of learning on to your kids!

  11. Okay, I tried to leave a comment and don't remember if it is waiting review or I didn't post it right, sorry-

Thanks for the great suggestions. Thanks also for the kid picks. I've got two preschoolers so if you visit my site you will see their reading consumes mine!

  12. Lynette - A cousin-ish of my husbands wrote a Gluten-Free cookbook and such. She ended up in the hospital from eating gluten so she should know her stuff by now. I'll see if I can get the title. Thanks for posting about the dish party. I would have missed it otherwise.

  13. My son is gluten-free/casine free for autism. I need to read more books about it because of him. The only one I've read is Special Diet for Special Kids and it's a cookbook. I need to get in research mode and just do it! I haven't heard of Nourishing Traditions. Maybe I'll start there.

  15. Came by from "Dishing It." That "Grouchy Lady Bug sounds interesting! I like kids books now and then. "Nubs" is a non-fiction children's book about a dog and a marine. The illustrations are great! It's sad but has a happy ending.

I was too late for the link up on "Dishing It" so here's mine: http://ourstack.blogspot.com/2010/07/dishing-it-party-summer-reads.html

  16. I'm in the middle of reading five books right now - all non-fiction and most borrowed from the library. When our daughter was young, I read to her often and now she loves reading, too.
